چکیده

A differential method was used to investigate the focal ratio degradation (FRD) exhibited by, and throughput of, a selection of current-generation optical fibres. These fibres were tested to establish which would be best suited to feed the High Resolution Spectrograph being built for the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), as well as for future instruments on WIYN and SALT. The double re-imaging system of Bershady et al. (2004) was substantially modified to improve image quality and measurement efficiency, and to permit a direct FRD-measurement in the far-field. The reimaging method compares the beam profile produced by light which passes through a fibre to that which does not. Broad and intermediate band-pass filters were used between 400-800 nm to test for wavelength dependence in the observed FRD over a wide range in beam-speeds. Our results continue to be at odds with a mico-bend model for FRD. We conclude that the new Polymicro FBP fibre is the most suitable product for broadband applications.

Characterisation of cooled infrared fibres for the Gemini IRMOS

Recently integral field spectroscopy has become a band-wagon among the optical astronomical community and most of the 8m class telescopes plan to offer this as part of their instrumentation package. The possibility of expanding integral field spectroscopy into the near infrared (1-2.5μm) opens exciting new possibilities for the study of a variety of astronomical objects. In this paper, we discu...

Sub-pixel Response Measurement of Near-infrared Sensors

Wide-field survey instruments are used to efficiently observe large regions of the sky. To achieve the necessary field of view, and to provide a higher signal-to-noise ratio for faint sources, many modern instruments are undersampled. However, precision photometry with undersampled imagers requires a detailed understanding of the sensitivity variations on a scale much smaller than a pixel. To a...

Statistical Test of Optical Fibers for use in PMAS, the Potsdam Multi-Aperture Spectrophotometer

Focal ratio degradation measurements of optical fibers for the PMAS integral field instrument have been performed using the Photometric Testbench of the Potsdam Astrophysical Institute (AIP). An effort has been made to obtain sufficiently large statistical samples of individual fiber measurements. The optimization of the measurement process has made it possible to study quantitatively the effec...

Wide field astronomy with Starbug 1

Starbug is a new concept for a robotic positioning system able to deploy many payloads, such as pickoff optics, optical fibres, integral field units over the focal surface of a telescope. Aimed at addressing some of the weakness of current positioning systems, Starbug employs micro-robotic actuators to independently and simultaneously position multiple small payloads accurately on an arbitraril...
